What’s Trending in Hair ~ 2021

The ‘70s are Back, Baby!

So much of what hair is showing this spring is from that rockin’ decade in style. I knew when Miley Cyrus took a page out of Billie Ray’s playbook and showed up with a Mullet that we were in for a great ride. Hair Trends of 2021? A retro reset on the iconic style of the 70’s.

Here’s what we’re seeing for cuts:

  • The Mullet, The Shag ~ Yep, they’re back in a new and modern way. Great for Zoom meetings yet still a lot of fun, featuring tons of texture and movement. We’re seeing younger and older clients asking for this ageless look featuring lots of “up-round layers.”
  • The Bang ~ Curtain bangs, shorter in the center and gradually lengthening towards the sides, really frame the face. Very short, straight bangs across the forehead give an edgy vibe. And the natural spirals of bang curls punctuate the look of hair of any length and bring attention to your eyes.
  • The Bob ~ This eternal classic has been reinvented this year, either stick-straight and cut above the jaw line or in messy, wavy, flirty lengths that frame the face. We’re also seeing a “boy-meets-girl” look with a very low side part to bring about an androgynous glamour.
  • The “Fro” ~ Embrace the curls! We love the return to the round, natural behavior of thick, curly hair. It’s a timeless look and so simple to maintain. Long curly bangs add double the interest and sculpting to the face.
  • The Low Maintenance ~ Long, straight hair, cut all at one length at or below the collar bone, makes for a modern, clean line.
  • The Big Chop ~ Around here, that’s The Kenny Cut, a statement style that brings the focus right to your eyes with a fringe that is short or back off the face. This year’s update incorporates a longer top and shorter sides to create a bold, sexy shape that is super feminine.
  • The Long Run ~ Hair extensions in long, shaggy layers are back in a big way.  Crimping and waving techniques add texture and a punchy vitality to a traditional long-hair look.

No matter what trend you choose,  we recommend micro-trims every four to six weeks to keep your look fresh and on point.

And here are some of the bigger trends for color:

  • The Bold Color Band ~ Wide swaths of contrasting color in deep sections frame the face. Shades range from copper, caramel, poppy red or blond, to playful, non-traditional choices of blues, greens, and purples for your adventurous moments.
  • The Balayage ~ This continues to trend in 2021, delivering a subtle, more natural look than traditional highlights that are more defined and structured. This spring’s take features even less contrast and more integration of color than seasons past. It’s all about subtle and elegant dimension.

As always, work with your stylist to consider the structure of your face, texture of your hair and hair-care practices to find the updated look that is just right for you. And enjoy the resurgence of these fun and freeing styles. Goodness knows, we can all use a little fun and freedom right now!
