Winter Hair!

Winter weather can wreak havoc on hair!

Think about the glossy, supple leaves of summer that become brown and crispy in late fall and winter. Colder, drier temperatures and indoor heating parch our scalps, roots, and hair shafts in a similar way. Here’s how you can “winterize” your routine to prevent scaley scalps and brittle, breakage-prone hair.

Exfoliating, moisturizing, and protecting are Game Changers for keeping your hair healthy during the long winter season.

I always stand behind professional grade hair care products. My suggestions below are based on K/WSalons’ proven success with the Kerastase line. Ask your stylist to recommend the right products for you.

  • Check in on your shampoo and conditioner ~ The products you use during a balmy summer often aren’t enough to fight extreme cold. Consider switching to more hydrating formulas such as Kerastase’s Bain Satin shampooand Masquintense conditioner for sensitized, dry hair. Oil-rich Elixir Ultime shampoo and Le Masque conditioner are also great choices for a softer shine. If your hair is extremely dry, skip a shampoo and go straight to conditioning every once in a while to give the oil from your scalp and roots a chance to replenish.
  • Build a solid base ~ It’s so easy to overlook the scalp, but that’s where it all begins. Exfoliating and fortifying are key. Start with a vigorous Scrub Apaisant to dislodge and remove flaking and stimulate blood flow to rejuvenate follicles. Then apply Initialiste Scalp & Hair Serum to towel-dried hair to strengthen, repair elasticity, and stimulate new growth.
  • Add in seasonal, super-moisturizing treatments ~ In-salon Fusio Dose treatments are composed by your stylist for your specific hair condition. These custom “cocktails” do wonders to restore winter-damaged lengths with results that can last for 6 weeks or more.  At-home treatments prolong the health and beauty of your in-salon services.   We get fantastic feedback on 8H Magic Night Serum and Serum Cicanuit, both overnight, leave-in treatments that build moisture, shine and elasticity and don’t transfer to your pillow or bed linens. It’s like beauty sleep for your hair. Baume Miracle hair balm is an oil-based finishing product applied to dry hair to tame static and eliminate fly-aways.
  • Cheat the heat ~ Damage caused by excessive blow drying and flat- or curling-iron use can really be minimized by a thermo-protectant. Your stylist can recommend the right Thermique product to stave off heat-related weakness, split ends and breakage. And replace your heat tools when necessary! They do not last forever, and even expensive units will burn your hair when past their prime or dropped and damaged.
  • Get Some Salon Love ~ It’s important to choose a salon that uses professionally proven hair color lines with cream-based options low in or free of ammonia. Good color protects your hair and improves its texture. Store-bought color can hide gray but can be very damaging to the hair and difficult and expensive to correct.

Again, rely on your stylist as your educator to recommend the right treatments and routines.

They know your hair well and can really help you keep it healthy and looking it’s best, all year long.
